Why natural movement is so good for the over 60's!
NOTE - This post was originally written for our 'weekly warble' segment in a few Facebook groups for the community local to our gym.
Welcome to the weekly warble here at Ideanthro Movement!
In this week's warble I'm going to talk about why natural movement is such a great way to exercise for people over 60. For those of you wondering, 'natural movement' is the technical term for the style of exercise we do at Ideanthro Movement.
The first reason that natural movement is such a good way to exercise for people over 60 is that it very directly helps make your daily activities easier. If you've felt that your balance has declined or you're finding it harder to get up and down from chairs (let alone the ground), then practising natural movement will help you immensely. This because the movements that we practise in natural movements are exactly that; the movements the we naturally need to use in our daily lives. That starts with things like balance, getting up and down from the floor and so on. Yes, there are also more advanced (and flashy) natural human movements like vaulting, jumping and climbing that we can also practise when the time is right, but the core foundational movements like balance and the strength to easily get up and down are directly applicable to daily life.
The second reason that natural movement is a great way for people over 60 to exercise is that it is completely adjustable to suit your abilities. Let's take balance as an example. If I'm helping a spritely young thing refine their balance I might give them a narrow, round metal beam to balance on. But if you're not as spritely as you once were, I'm going to introduce you to balance with a nice wide, flat wooden beam, and I'm going to stand nearby for safety. If you want to hold my hold for support, that's also ok. That's just one example, but the point is, the same skill can be adjusted for any ability level.
I could go on, but I'll leave it there. Over the past couple of years we've built up a great little community of people over 60 here at Ideanthro Movement, all using our approach to stay nimble, strong and capable!
Have a lovely day!
