Handstand workshop - 7th of May!

Welcome to the weekly warble here at Ideanthro Movement.

In the not too distant future we're going to be hosting a handstand workshop.

This workshop is perfect for people completely new to handstanding, through to those who can hold a handstand for 5 or 10 seconds, but want to make it easier and more consistent.

With that in mind, in this week's warble I'm going to share a tip for learning to handstand.

There are many fancy, bendy types of handstands that you can learn. But when you're starting out the best thing you can do for yourself is to work on your alignment.

By alignment I mean your ability to make a perfectly straight line with your arms, torso and legs. When you achieve a straight line, balance becomes much easier.

The way to work on alignment is with the help of a wall. It's very tempting to learn to handstand by simply trying to kick up and balance, but there's so much going on here that it's hard to refine anything. Your body will default to where it is currently most comfortable, not where we want to get to. By using a wall to help you balance you give yourself a chance to refine your position.

Once we're using the wall, we want to think about pushing strong into the floor and creating a straight line at the shoulder. Our arms should be directly in line with our torso. This lays a solid foundation for our position. From here, we can think about squeezing our glutes, and pointing our toes.

I could go on, but that's a fair bit of information already. Handstanding is a deep, fascinating topic and a rewarding pursuit.

If you'd like to learn more, our workshop is a great way. It is an opportunity to safely experiment with handstanding for the first time, or to refine your existing handstand to make it more consistent.
