Training should be as nuanced as our bodies
Welcome to the weekly warble here at Ideanthro Movement.
This week I thought I'd give you an example of how attention to the fine details of movement can make a big difference in your fitness journey.
Recently a client of mine was stretching and noticed that they were substantially tighter on one side than the other. The specific stretch isn't important, but what is important is that it was a stretch that involved rotating and bending the upper leg in the hip joint, one side at a time.
The straightforward approach to this would be to invest more time stretching that side. And that approach often helps. But sometimes it doesn't. Any anyway our bodies are more nuanced than that.
No part of our body moves in isolation. It's all connected. For example, in the case of the hip, its ability to rotate, flex and extend is linked to subtle movement of the pelvis, not to mention what the lower leg and foot are doing.
Thus instead of simply spending more time stretching the hip right away, we paused the stretch and first did some subtle stability and mobility work centred around the pelvis. When we returned to the stretch, the hip was immediately more flexible and the stretch improved this further.
The point here is not to say that I'm some magical hip whisperer. It's simply to point out that when it comes to our bodies, our health and our fitness, the details matter. When we get the fine details right, amazing stuff is possible.
At Ideanthro Movement we take a slow and steady approach to fitness help people of all walks of life learn movement skills, gain strength and become more flexible than they ever thought possible.
