Achieving stretch goals

Welcome to the weekly warble here at Ideanthro Movement.

This week I'm going to talk about stretch goals.

By stretch goals I mean big movement goals that are outside our current abilities, but which, with consistent practice, will become possible.

The thing about stretch goals, particularly as they relate to movement, is that they feel very hard (and sometimes even impossible) until you achieve them.

Thus, if you are going to make progress with these movements it's critical that you follow a process that you have faith in.

Our bodyweight strength class is a good example of such a process.

In each bodyweight strength class we begin by devoting about 40minutes to solid, foundational strength and mobility work. That first portion is all about laying a sound foundation from which to build more advanced movements.

The last 20 minutes of class however is different. This part is what we call our 'overreach' part. It's about picking a movement that is currently beyond our abilities, and then doing appropriate work such that over time that advanced movement will become possible.

In the video attached to this post I demonstrate two achievable progressions on the road to a much more difficult hand balancing pose known as the 'air baby'.

Make no mistake, an air baby is a very challenging movement. But with the solid foundation of the first half of class, combined with the sensible progressions of the overreach section, progress occurs steadily.

If you'd like to know more about our approach to training and how you can build towards movement stretch goals, feel free to send me a DM or contact us at www.ideanthromovement.com/contact

Have a good one!
